Hydrogen Production with Membranes

Carbon Dioxide Reduction

  • The practice of "Net Zero by 2050" through greenhouse gas reduction is an international promise and action to make the world a better place to live. The world is jointly working to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

  • CO2 accounts for about 76% of total greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 reduction is the most effective way to reduce greenhouse gases.

  • In the production of hydrogen, a clean fuel, technology that efficiently removes carbon dioxide has become important.

Hydrogen Production

  • Hydrogen produced by SMR is termed 'grey hydrogen' when the waste carbon dioxide is released to the atmosphere and 'blue hydrogen' when the carbon dioxide is captured and sequestered.

  • To recover and purify hydrogen, a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology is applied. It operates at high pressure and high temperature to separate hydrogen, and this results in high initial facility cost as well as operational cost.

  • The membrane carbon capture device is an innovative method for capturing CO2 and separating hydrogen from the gas that has passed through SMR. It operates at low pressure and ambient temperature, so the initial equipment cost and production cost are low. It is expected that the production cost of blue hydrogen is reduced by 25% to 50%, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the blue hydrogen produced with natural gas.
